JOHN A. RISSMAN has broad legal experience in industry and private practice, concentrating in patent law, where he provides clients with strategic, business-focused counseling in the development, management and exploitation of their intellectual property. John's practice supports a number of corporate IP functions, including patent procurement, technology transfer and licensing, due diligence support, and related IP litigation. He also has substantial, multi-national patent litigation experience, including management of several European "Cross-Border Injunction" patent litigations.

Over the past 25 years, John's practice has focused on technologies relating to the biomedical industry, including medical devices, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals. His patent experience in the medical device industry embraces diagnostic and therapeutic products in several technical fields, including those of cardiac rhythm management, interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, orthopedics, medical imaging, general surgery, diabetes management, and gastroenterology / urology.

John also provides general IP counseling to numerous venture capital organizations. He has made several international presentations at conferences sponsored by various international sponsors, such as the European Venture Capital Association and the European Business Forum. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Rissman served as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Boston Scientific Corporation; Chief Patent Counsel for SciMed Life Systems, Inc.; and Senior Patent Counsel for Medtronic, Inc.

John holds a B.S., Applied Mathematics & Computer Engineering, 1976 from Northern Illinois University, a B.S.E.E. 1989 from the University of Minnesota, and a J.D. 1978 from Drake Law School. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa.
